Mathematics

We are mathematicians.  As mathematicians, we apply our fluency while exploring a range of problems and challenges in a range of contexts.  At Kew Woods we follow a mastery approach to Mathematics, all the way up to Year 6, working alongside White Rose Maths, North West Maths Hubs and the NCTEM.  To read more about mastery, you can read: The National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Maths ‘What is Mastery?

By the end of Year 2, we are fluent in our recall of additive facts, and by the end of Year 4 we have rapid recall of all multiplication facts and their related division facts, up to 12 x 12.  We have the opportunity to celebrate our fluency by earning, and wearing, fluency stars:

Bronze- Rapid recall of 2, 5 and 10 times table

Silver- Rapid recall of 4, 8 and 6 times tables

Gold- Rapid recall of all times tables up to 12 x 12

At Kew Woods, fluency is embedded and developed consistently over time, enabling our brains to focus on the mathematical concepts we are learning.

Mathematics is a high priority at Kew Woods from EYFS, providing the conceptual understanding for pupils to flourish in Year 6 and beyond.  Opportunities are constantly provided for pupils to show off their understanding and problem solving skills, including themed days, challenge activities and enterprise projects.

We want all children to enjoy Mathematics and to experience success in the subject, with the ability to reason mathematically. We are committed to developing children’s curiosity about the subject, as well as an appreciation of the beauty and power of Mathematics.
