“Every child is an artist.” – Pablo Picasso
“Creativity takes courage.” – Henri Matisse
We are excited about the arts at Kew.
In the visual arts all children will have opportunities to express themselves using a variety of media for example painting, printing, modelling, collage, textiles and drawing. Children are encouraged to develop their ideas through the use of sketch books. A wide range of materials are available and children are given freedom to explore and produce their own original work. Many artists and craftspeople are studied as is art from a range of cultures and different periods of history.
Kew is the proud holder of the prestigious Artsmark award and hopes to build on this with individual children developing further skills and achieving-the children’s Arts Award, a nationally recognised certificate which if continued at Secondary level can contribute towards university points.
Our pupils say:
“I’ve learned there are no wrongs in art; a mistake can help us make something totally new”. Year 4 pupil
“Art is about looking and feeling, not just drawing” Year 6 pupil
“Looking at the paintings by other artists helps at the start. I use their style but change it a bit. I like working with watercolours.”
