Mathematics

At Kew Woods Primary School, we develop a love of mathematics through engaging and imaginative maths lessons, incorporating fluency, problem solving and reasoning.

Children in the EYFS enjoy a rich mathematical environment and have the opportunity to develop mathematical skills though play and formal maths carpet sessions, inside and outside the classroom.

In Key stage 1 and 2, our children have a daily maths lesson following the White Rose Hub scheme of learning. They are taught objectives within their year group and group activities are differentiated according to pupil ability. Maths lessons provide daily opportunities for children to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence when solving problems and we add depth to learning through the use of White Rose, NRICH and NCETM problems.

At Kew Woods, children develop knowledge of key facts and multiplication tables through weekly Rainbow Maths tests, which are introduced at the end of Year 2 and motivate children to secure their understanding of these facts in order to progress through the 'stages' of Rainbow Maths. The stages of the Rainbow Maths scheme are outlined in the document below. Children also have access to Times Table Rock Stars to develop these skills in a fun and engaging way, and are able to access this website from home. Communication technology is used when appropriate to support learning, with children having access to iPads and the computers in the Berners-Lee Hub.

“Going to Birkdale High School showed us what life after year 6 would be like. All of Year 5 and year 6 went there for a maths challenge. We went online to try out some maths problems too for World maths Day.”
