At Kew Woods Primary School we aim develop children’s understanding of number and equip them with the skills to solve real life mathematical problems and challenges and to promote an enjoyment of mathematics.
The children in the EYFS enjoy a rich mathematical environment and have the opportunity to develop mathematical skills though play and formal maths carpet sessions, inside and outside the classroom.
In Key stage 1 and 2 our children have a daily maths lesson. They are taught objectives within their year group and group activities are differentiated according to pupil ability. Our daily maths lessons provide the opportunity for children to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence when solving problems. Our maths lessons have a clear structure: A mental starter where they develop their speed in calculations and their knowledge of the times tables, a teaching session focussing on learning new knowledge linked to the year group’s objectives in number, measure, geometry or statistics followed by time to practice and apply skills learnt in a different context. All children complete a weekly mental maths or times tables test.
Communication technology is used when appropriate to support learning, with children having access to I pads and the computers in the Berners-Lee Hub. We have access to Mymaths to support children’s learning at home.
“Going to Birkdale High School showed us what life after year 6 would be like. All of Year 5 and year 6 went there for a maths challenge. We went online to try out some maths problems too for World maths Day.”
