Design & Technology
At Kew Woods Primary School, Design and Technology is an inspiring, practical and knowledge-rich subject that encourages children to become creative thinkers, innovative designers and confident problem-solvers. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum from EYFS to Year 6, pupils develop the technical knowledge, practical skills and resilience needed to design, make and evaluate products for a range of real-life purposes. Learning is structured around the key areas of structures, mechanisms, mechanical and electrical systems, textiles, and cooking and nutrition, ensuring clear progression and increasing challenge across the school. Children follow an iterative design process of investigating, designing, making, testing and evaluating, while developing subject-specific vocabulary and an understanding of how design and technology shapes the modern world. Through opportunities to explore sustainability, healthy living and the work of influential designers, engineers and inventors, pupils gain valuable cultural capital and make meaningful links with science, mathematics, computing and art. Our curriculum equips children with the creativity, independence and technical understanding required for future learning and life in an increasingly technological society.Â
