Geography at Kew Woods Primary School is designed as a coherent, knowledge-rich curriculum where pupils build understanding over time through clearly sequenced learning. We teach through both substantive concepts (key knowledge such as place, location, human and physical features, rivers and climate) and disciplinary concepts (how pupils think and work as geographers through fieldwork, map skills, analysis and reasoning). In Key Stage 1, pupils develop a strong foundation by learning about continents, oceans and the UK, using maps and local fieldwork to understand place and compare locations. In Lower Key Stage 2, pupils deepen this knowledge through studies of the UK, rivers and the water cycle, alongside developing mapping skills, including OS maps and understanding patterns, processes and cause and effect. In Upper Key Stage 2, pupils apply and connect their knowledge by studying biomes, physical processes and global patterns, using advanced fieldwork and mapping skills to analyse and explain relationships and change. Throughout the curriculum, learning is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils revisit, apply and build on prior knowledge, enabling them to become increasingly confident and analytical geographers.
