At Kew Woods Primary School, we believe that children learn best through face-to-face teaching in school. However, there may be exceptional circumstances where pupils are unable to attend school but are able and well enough to continue their education remotely.

Where remote education is required, we aim to provide learning that is meaningful, accessible and closely linked to the curriculum pupils would normally be following in school.

When will remote learning be provided?

Remote learning may be provided when:

  • the school, a class or a group of pupils is unable to access face-to-face education;
  • exceptional circumstances mean pupils cannot safely access the school site;
  • an individual pupil is unable to attend school for a period of time but is well enough to learn and remote education is considered appropriate.

Remote learning would not normally be provided for short-term absence due to illness. Children who are unwell should be given the opportunity to rest and recover.

Accessing Remote Learning

Kew Woods Primary School uses Microsoft Teams to provide remote learning.

When remote learning is required, teachers will use Microsoft Teams to share appropriate activities and resources. Learning will, wherever possible, reflect the curriculum being taught in school.

Remote learning may include:

  • teacher explanations and instructions;
  • recorded or live teaching where appropriate;
  • activities and worksheets;
  • links to educational resources;
  • reading activities;
  • independent tasks;
  • opportunities to submit work and receive feedback.

Access Microsoft Teams

Parents and pupils can access Microsoft Teams using their school login details.  These will be distributed when needed.

Expectations for Remote Learning

We ask pupils to engage with the learning provided as far as they are able.

The amount and type of work provided will be appropriate to the child’s age and circumstances. We recognise that remote learning will look different for a Reception pupil compared with a pupil in Year 6.

Teachers will also take account of individual pupils’ needs when setting remote learning.

Supporting Pupils with SEND

We recognise that some pupils with SEND may find accessing remote education more challenging.

Teachers will consider individual needs and make reasonable adjustments where appropriate. This may include adapted activities, alternative resources, printed materials or additional communication with families.

Having Difficulty Accessing Remote Learning?

We do not want access to technology to become a barrier to a child’s education.

Parents and carers should contact school if they:

  • do not have access to a suitable device;
  • have difficulties accessing the internet;
  • have forgotten or do not have their child’s Microsoft Teams login details;
  • experience technical difficulties accessing Microsoft Teams;
  • require printed learning materials;
  • feel their child requires additional support to access their learning.

We will work with families to identify appropriate support.

Online Safety and Safeguarding

Our safeguarding and online safety expectations continue to apply during periods of remote learning.

When pupils participate in online learning, they should follow the school’s expectations for safe and responsible use of technology.

Parents and carers should contact school if they have any concerns about their child’s safety or wellbeing.
