Year 6 Performance

Each yearYear 6 are invited to collaboratively create a full-scale musical production, with the aim to encourage teamwork, develop confidence, and give children the platform to express themselves. With full production lighting, sound, set design and costumes, they are exposed to a performer’s life in the industry. We are delighted at the impact these productions have, as so many students find their calling throughout the rehearsal process. Whether interested in being on stage, helping with the sound and lighting design, building props, creating a programme, or ensuring backstage is organised, there is a role for everybody within the project.

Wally Cain

Each year, a group of students are invited to participate in a Sefton-wide competition called the Wally Vain Dance Festival. Students are given a creative stimulus to base their dances on, and collaboratively with a dance teacher, they choreograph and showcase their skills in a festival on a professional stage. This opportunity not only builds confidence, but also allows students the opportunity to experience a professional theatre set up, and take part in focused rehearsals. Kew Woods Primary School are very proud of their achievement and are looking forward to the next festival opportunity.

Art Leaders

We are the new Art Leaders at Kew Woods. We are going to think of new learning opportunities and activities in the Arts for all pupils to join in with. We are enjoying our new roles and have lots of creative ideas that we would like to share.

Celebration Week

As part of Arts Mark Celebration week Kew Woods  Arts Leaders, School Council and Eco School Council  were delighted to mark the start of our exciting new link with Ivy Gate Lodge Care Home. Bouquets of paper flowers were specially created for residents of the home by our pupils. After learning about some of the activities residents can take part in at the care home such as exercise sessions, arts and crafts pupils presented the bouquets to the activity coordinator at the home. Together we are working to plan opportunities for our pupils to take part in intergenerational activities with residents in the future. We are excited about the opportunities this new link will have for our pupils.

Wellbeing Tree

The Art Leaders planned to make a well being sculpture and decided on a Wellbeing tree with uplifting messages on the leaves, written by the pupils in Key Stage 2. It is now living in the library where pupils can enjoy reading underneath it.

A Morning of Happiness

Pupils in key stage one performed in a show all about positivity and happiness. Parents were welcomed back into school, having not seen pupils perform in person for some time. The three shows included six dance routines to upbeat songs that aimed to spread joy. Each class learned their choreography with teachers, enjoying the process thoroughly. We certainly saw many smiling faces during and after the performance!

Arts in Reception

During the summer term, Reception were given the opportunity to perform for an audience for the first time. They embraced their moment by sharing their learning journey with parents. This journey started with a different welcome as the children taught their parents how to sign ‘Welcome’ using the British Sign Language they had recently learnt. The journey then took us through the topics including counting songs with a space theme, animals poems and art ‘down in the jungle’ and a retelling, narration and acting of a famous story; The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Parents enjoyed being taken on their journey of learning and seeing all of the six topics their child had encountered whilst the children thrived from the parent’s participation.

African Drumming

As one of our extended music opportunities, all pupils have had the opportunity to participate in African djembe drumming sessions.

High School Links

We enjoyed another excellent drama lesson on our Year 4 Curriculum Day
at Stanley High School. We worked in groups to mime scenarios and
played listening activities. We built on skills that we remembered
from our visit in year 3.

Meols Cop Dance Festival

On Tuesday 7th February and Wednesday 8th February, 16 Year 6 pupils participated in Meols cop Dance Festival. 5 dance leaders, from Meols Cop High School taught weekly sessions throughout autumn and spring term to prepare our performers. This extra curricular club was led by Year 9 pupils, and supervised by our performing arts leader. The evening festival showcased talent from 4 local primary schools, and Meols Cop showcased dancers from a variety of year groups. The head of dance at Meols Cop stated ‘Our festival is an inclusive festival. It is a celebration of dance’.
