Economic Understanding

Economic Understanding

At Kew Woods Primary School we believe in educating our pupils on having an economic understanding of how they can make sensible choices with money.

We use the 1Decision resources and planning from Reception to Year 6. We supplement the 1Decision scheme with assemblies, visitors, additional programmes and initiatives. Teachers adapt the detailed planning and resources to meet the needs of their class and their high-quality teaching and differentiation where required, ensure all pupils including those with SEND, can access and make progress. We have ambition for all across all areas of our curriculum.

Please see our breadth map in the Curriculum section of the website to see how we continually teach and revisit many aspects of Economic understanding. Through our curriculum we teach about keeping money safe, money around the world, different types of money and how to save money.

As part of our teaching of Enterprise staff also teacher separate sessions in mathematics about the importance of money in Spring term. Key Stage 1 pupils’ complete activities around Where does money come from? Lower Key Stage 2 pupils’ complete lessons about managing budgets and banking. Upper key stage 2 pupils’ complete sessions about safe and sensible spending and why making informed decisions will help make the most of the money they have.

Children in Year 3 work in partnership with the Windmills foundation where they have a set budget to plan and work on a project to put a ‘smile’ on the face of people in the local community. https://windmillsfoundation.org/smile/

Careers

We talk to the children about different types of jobs from an early age and what skill sets would be required for each occupation.  We also talk to the children about what they would like to do when they get older and why.  When the children get older we then discuss what route they would need to take to get there and what subject specialisms and character qualities each occupation would require.  We also talk about life skills and how to become more independent too.

We link out work on careers to many curriculum subjects where we look at mathematicians, authors, artists, musicians, chefs and designers.  We also invite visitors in to talk to the children, including parents and carers, so that they can hear their stories.  In assemblies and class discussions we also make links to inspirational people and have a growth mindset attitude to goals you want to achieve.

At Kew Woods we have also had a world of work day where the children are invited to talk to a range of different people about the jobs they have and what they do.
